Powerful in Pink: Ariah’s Nursery Reveal

I’m so excited to reveal my latest celebrity nursery and share my heart and the spirit that went into designing it!!

I’ve had the privilege of designing the nursery for Tamera Mowry and revealing it on her website, TameraMowry.com Below is what I posted on her site as a guest blogger, but please visit her site to see more pictures and enjoy other lovely post on her blog.

All along this fun, creative journey, we’ve referred to this nursery as “Pretty In Pink”. It was the theme of Tamera’s amazing shower, and made sense, but as I look at the finished product, I can’t help but to think that while yes, it is “pretty”, what we really created for sweet little Ariah was a space that says “Power in Pink”. For months, Tamera and I have been preparing for her baby girl’s arrival and along the way I’ve been able to share with you how-to’s and tips based off of my design process, so today I’d rather try to share with you the part that doesn’t come with a how-to… the heart and spirit that went into it.

It is so easy to get wrapped up in the sweetness of a little girl! We did tap into that, as it is almost impossible not to. However, as I know from experience with my own two beauties, it is so important to not just give our girls the idea that their power and worth is tied into their beauty and sweetness, but more so into their faith, heart and conviction.

When I look at the crown above the crib, I don’t see the crown of a princess, but of a future queen of creation and love. When I look at the angel wings on the wall, I don’t just see that they are there because Ariah herself is a heavenly, little angel (which let’s face it, she is), but that they are a reminder that all the heavenly angels above will be watching over Ariah, as she plays, as she sleeps, as she grows, to protect and guide her spirit.

Speaking strictly about the design elements, I would have to say that my most loved aspect of the room is the way the gold crown and the beautiful Bratt Décor crib look against the two-tone striped wall, which adds sophistication. Also, the personalized ceiling medallion, pillow and gorgeous chandelier add a perfect hint of glamour, but again, my most favorite touches came from the heart, with anticipation of love-filled moments of the future. Like the tiny stool in the corner, that Tamera has had for years. She thought it was the perfect addition to the room, because one day, big brother Aden will sit there and read his baby sister stories. Or the soccer ball artwork hanging on the wall, which was Daddy’s special addition to the room, because yes, she’ll be Daddy’s little girl, but that only means he’ll be cheering her on that much louder from the sidelines when she scores the winning goal for her team.

No matter the project, or the client, the final step of my process is to stand in the finished labor of love that is the nursery and say a prayer asking for only the deepest most profound love and protection be brought to the little soul who’s cries and laughter will soon fill the four walls around me. I had that moment with Tamera. That moment, more than the nursery itself, is what keeps me coming back for more.

Little Ariah will surely be pretty in pink in this nursery for many years to come, but she will be powerful in purpose for all the years that follow. — Shalena

Tamera Mowry-Housley’s Sweet Baby Shower!

Hello everyone!

A few weeks ago, I celebrated the upcoming arrival of Tamera and Adam Housley’s daughter at their “Pretty in Pink” baby shower, held at the Casa del Mar Hotel in Malibu. It was beautiful! I was greeted with such love and warmth, as all her closest friends and family gathered to celebrate such a special occasion. They hired the talented Mindy Weiss to create the sweetest girly environment. Everything was perfect, from the flowers to the favors, and of course the glowing mommy couldn’t have been more radiant.

Be sure to pick up this weeks US Weekly magazine for the entire scoop and visit Tamera’s website for more pinterest worthy photos. I was able to capture a few images of my own and I thought I would share.

Enjoy, Shalena

June Bloom of Blessings!!

June Bloom is a new family tradition that we started today! Will you join us this month and participate in June Bloom with our family?

June GLOOM as defined in Wikipedia is a southern California term for a weather pattern that results in cloudy, overcast skies with cool temperatures during the late spring and early summer, most commonly in the month of June. The overcast skies often are accompanied by fog and drizzle, though usually not rain.

June BLOOM as defined by the Smith family is a daily commitment to acknowledge the blessings in our lives. It is a daily pattern of showing gratitude which will results in happiness, contentment and a spirit of thankfulness. June Bloom is a month of expectancy, a forecast of clear skies, prosperity and overall well being.

Today the girls covered a mason jar with a sign that says, June Bloom. Everyday we will write on a piece of paper what we’re thankful for, share it with each other and place it inside the jar. A thankful heart is often accompanied by joy, peace, kindness and a clear perspective and awareness that God is merciful and sovereign, always present.

Our family has had a challenging year and these thank you notes will be a constant reminder to “Be present in all things and thankful for all things,” Dr. Maya Angelou. They are also seeds of faith that we’re planting and believing God for supernatural things, knowing that He hears our cries, and yet we are grateful.

I’ll be on Facebook and tweeting #JuneBloomBlessings. You can follow me @shalenasmith and share with me what you’re thankful for by using the same hashtag.

I pray that June is a month of blooming blessings for you!!!

P.S. “Say thank you because you know God can put a rainbow in the clouds.” Dr. Angelou

Happy New Year!!!

Sorry this post is a little late but I didn’t want January to end without wishing some of my biggest supporters a Happy New Year!!

The beginning of a new year brings many resolutions and new commitments. My prayer for you is that as you seek Gods will for the next season of your life that you receive the direction and momentum that you need to have a successful year!

Every year I select a scripture that I STAND on and a SONG that I sing. One is spiritual and the other, NOT so much… Haha! My scripture this year is Psalm 28:7 “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.” For my song of choice I’m taking it way back in the day with Diana Ross “I’m Coming Out”! Now I know that song means different things to different people but for me at this stage of my life, it’s the perfect song choice. 🙂 I’m so excited for what this year will bring for my family and I.

What is your New Years resolution and is there anything specifically that you do to prepare for the new year? Please share, I can’t wait to hear!

Miracle Twins

You can’t tell just by looking at someone that they’ve struggled, you can’t see the true depth of their pain or their courage for that matter. Sometimes all you see is the victory and the Glory that belongs to God. I saw this picture today of my friend and client that has an amazing story. It’s not mine to tell, but let me just say this…
Miracles happen and God is always faithful to complete the good work that He begins in you. This photo of a “real life” family and their little boys is my proof that God is the greatest!!
And by the way, their nursery is super cute!! One day, I’ll have to share.

Do You Have a Dream? Don’t Give Up!

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve posted, I’ve been extremely busy with work and family. Most days I give myself time for a devotional and afterwards I journal to keep record of my experiences. The journal entry that I wrote a few days ago was meant for my eyes only but it’s been pressing on my heart to share with you.

Do you have a dream? Can’t we all relate to being exhausted at pursuing something that God has put on our heart? I feel it’s human nature to doubt at times and this week I had one of those days. Thankfully it quickly passed, but if this blog is meant to be about “All Things Baby” then it’s only appropriate to talk about that “baby” we all have… That deep rooted dream within our soul that we’re pushing to give birth to and share with the world! I hope this encourages you to KEEP PUSHING and to NOT GIVE UP!!

Journal Entry from October 08, 2013 (Unedited)

“So this is what it feels like right before your huge breakthrough and blessing. This is what all the Greats of our past and present must have felt. You feel disappointed, you feel deceived and you want to give up. The point that you question everything that you’ve done and are doing. The point that you start considering other options, different directions.. Wondering what made you select the road less traveled in the first place.
That voice that says you’ve Been turned down and rejected and it’s only a pipe dream.
So….I too feel all those things… I AM at the point that even though all those things run through my mind there’s still a relentless drive that says to believe, to have faith, and to keep going.
The stronger voice of the Holy Spirit that says I have the power to call things that be not as though they are. That supernatural power that makes me feel like I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.

Today I have lots of emotions but the strongest one that continues to win the battle of the mind in the midst of the confusion Screams one of HOPE!!! Plans to be prosperous and unharmed, plans of hope and future! So I will continue to stand strong and be courageous. I will not be afraid or discouraged for I stand ONLY on the promises of God and not of mans… #undaunted #intrepid”

Please share with me your DREAMS and how you’re encouraged to keep going.

Wishing you all the BEST!

This is what Living a Legacy looks like!

“Love is a Decision!” My Grandparents, Winston and Pansy Greene, married 57 years!

This blog isn’t always about interior design & celebrity lifestyles, but about my life experiences. Today I want to share with you the legacy of my Grandparents, Winston & Pansy Greene.

We write the story of our lives with every decision that we make and in the end, all the stories and all those decisions ultimately become our legacy,” Pastor Chris Nicely. (Legacy Minded Church.)

I’m writing this post with overwhelming emotions after listening to my Grandparents on a radio interview ‘Despite Alzheimer’s, Couple Holds Tight To Old Memories.’

Too many emotions to describe but the one feeling that is screaming from my heart is how PROUD I am of these two amazing people!

Being leaders in their community and public speaking is nothing new for these too, so I wasn’t surprised when I heard they took a trip to DC to speak out on Alzheimer’s or when I saw their most recent article.

Pansy Greene, 73, a beautiful woman of God, a mother and great-grandmother, sweetest person I know, loyal, strong, a leader and fighter…. Her journey continues!

My fondest memories as a child are the times that I shared in their home. They have served their entire lives as members of Marriage Encounter and frequently opened their home for a place for couples to reconnect and share their experiences. I remember looking forward to these meetings and helping them prepare. One time we had a visit from a Priest that played his guitar, sang to us and for some strange reason he brought a snake for show and tell, LOL!!

I watched them weekly gather in their home with small groups, hold hands and pray together. I remember them laughing, sometimes crying, but what I remember most that has had a deep impact on my life is a phrase that was always visible, “Love is a Decision!” This phrase was on wall plaques, T-shirts, and something I often heard them say to each other. This phrase is engraved on their hearts!

As I write this I’m reminded of, 1 Corinthians 13:7. “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”

What makes me so proud is that these aren’t merely words to them but a daily action that has been shared and absorbed by thousands of others to witness and spread. I’m so blessed to still have them both as strong examples in my life. They have shown me the light and love of Jesus, period!

I want to continue to focus on their journey, their decision to love and their amazing legacy, not the disease.

They are a true success story! Today, my husband and I lead weekly small groups in our home. We come together for prayer, fellowship and worship. Need I say more about the impact that they have had on my life.

Thanks for reading. I pray that in some way this stirs your heart, as it has mine. Their story today has made me reflect on the kind of life I want to live for my children and others.

What legacy will we leave behind?

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love!

The Greene Family Legacy!
