Modernized Circus Themed Nursery

“Lion, and tigers and bears! Oh my!…”

I couldn’t be more pleased with how this nursery came out! You have to be careful to not overdo it when creating a circus themed nursery. To accomplish a modernize look we stayed away from the traditional primary colors and used soft neutral tones. I customized the furniture with a grey paint blended with a carmel stain to tie in the clients windows. The roman shades I designed also tied in with the accent color. I love how the rug by Surya added a pop of color with the orange stripe. We personalized it with a custom canvas centered with the crib, adding a monkey and elephant on each size to complement the subtle theme. Last but not least, we went over the top with the life size giraffe!! Mr. Giraffe was a total hit at the baby shower by the way when I delivered it. (Ask us about our exclusive Baby Registry Concierge.) So much fun!!!

There was also an unexpected little nook in the corner of this nursery. I used that space to put our Gaga Designs custom chair, side table and sconces. Oh, and did you see the navy blue trim out on the ceiling? It highlights the chandelier and it adds a nice surprise without having to paint the entire ceiling.

I loved creating this space. Email us at or call us at 818-366-8787 to purchase any of the items you see in this awesome nursery.

I love my job!! xoxo

Who’s Hot in Hollywood? Rising Star Issue- Behind the Scenes.

Yesterday I had a photo shoot for Localiez Magazine with an amazing photographer Daniel Gonzalez. It was such a honor when I got a call from Super Model/Actor/Designer Sam Sarpong, to model his new clothing line Future Stars Collection. The magazines concept was for Sam to select Rising Stars in Hollywood to represent the fashion line and I was blessed to be one of the people he chose.

They wanted to shoot me in my element followed by a personal Q & A. Here are some of the behind the scenes photos. Follow my Twitter, Facebook or Instagram account to get updates on when the issue is coming out.

I love designing custom nursery and kids bedding!

Oohhh lala…

I got an updated bedding book today from Bella Notte! I love working with their unique fabrics in my nursery and kids rooms. My clients love this line so much that we also order it for their master bedrooms. Velvets, satins, laces, linens, and silks… Putting all the different textures together and designing something special for my clients is the best part of my job! Adding buttons, bows, quilting, ruffles, layers, embroidery… sky is the limit for what you can create for your dream room!

I selected the Bella Notte Chesapeake crib bedding in my latest celebrity nursery for Tamera Mowry-Housely.

Contact us for an in-home design consultation so you can touch and feel the latest and greatest fabrics for your home! I must end this blog with more comfy bedding pics for you to fall in love with!

Throw out your Plan B!

Throw out your Plan B! I just got rid of mine… So what do we do now?

Well…. Now we have to throw out FEAR and self-doubt, get rid of negativity and the negative people in your life, a.k.a haters. Stop the self deprecation and never dim your LIGHT for anyone again! It’s time to pull out your wastebasket and throw away the back-up plan and go for God’s plan!

Today I saw this on twitter and retweeted it:

God doesn’t need a plan B. His plans will always supersede yours, they will always work out for your good, and they will always be on time!

Eastern Europe Installation of a Layered Bed Skirt

I wanted to tag this as “comedy” due to the amateur video, I must admit it’s pretty funny. I promise that as I start to video blog more the quality will get better. I didn’t want my need for perfection to get in the way of sharing with you a quick and easy way to create the look of a two-tiered dust ruffle in just a few minutes. This video was taken while I was working in Eastern Europe with one of my amazing clients. This is how quickly you can change the look of a simple single tier dust ruffle into a fun layered look!
This is an example of a layered bed skirt on a full-size bed, but you can also create the same look with your crib skirt. I wish the lighting was better, however in a few weeks the finished room with be in my portfolio for you to enjoy!

Have a good laugh, on me! More to come.. 🙂 xo SS

Virtual and International Nursery & Kids Room Design

My trip to Eastern Europe last month was amazing! After months of hard work, traveling back and forth to another Country and working with my client to create dream rooms for her daughters, the time had finally come. This trip was the final installation of EVERYTHING beautiful and I couldn’t be more pleased with how the rooms turned out!

It was so much fun! Over 36 pieces of custom furniture were delivered on an 18 wheeler truck. I brought in bedding ensembles, window treatments, carpet, accessories and even my muralist was flown in to add her magical touches.

Here are a few teaser pictures from my trip. I can’t share the completed photo’s with you just yet, but I promise to post them either on my portfolio at or I’ll direct you to the media outlet that writes about these fanciful rooms.

Knock Off the Look of a Celebrity Nursery by Going GaGa!!

Select a Chandelier to Spruce Up Your Nursery or Kids Room!- Shalena Smith

You don’t have to just be an admirer of beautiful rooms and only dream of the day your child can have a magical nursery or play area. It is absolutely possible for you to knock off a celebrity look, and have the nursery of your dreams, even on a limited budget.

As with anything, before you begin your project you need to come up with a realistic budget based on the things you desire. Here are some affordable design tips and items that will take your room from ordinary to extraordinary!

#1 Lighting – Get a cool chandelier or pendant. With clean painted walls these items will completely transform the look of your room.

#2 Pillows and Blankets – People often spend a lot of money on custom crib bedding or twin bedding. Less is more! Go with solid and inexpensive bedding and throw your colorful blanket over the crib to add color. If it’s a daybed or twin bed, add a fancy pillow with a different texture to add dimension and creativity.

#3 Hire Me – LOL! I just wanted to make the point that I am afforded by clients that aren’t millionaires. Even if it’s only for a one hour in-home or virtual consultation, I can inspire you to come up with unique and inexpensive ideas using what you already have or working within your budget. You’d be amazed at what happens to a dull and boring room when you reposition the furniture and add a few accessories. Sometimes your room has all the elements but they’re just not set up correctly.

#4 One Item at a Time – Don’t get discouraged because you have a smaller budget. Make your budget work for you! It may take you a little longer to complete your magical room, but just know that it’s possible. I created so that people all over the world could get single items that are featured in my celebrity rooms. For example here’s a custom Wall Hanging that was in Sean Combs’ twins’ nursery. A personalized, whimsical item like this is what makes a nursery special.

If you see something in my portfolio and can’t find it on my website, e-mail me at and I’ll send you pictures, product details, prices and more.

I was recently interviewed on this very topic by Tastemaker Magazine in Atlanta. A client who was on a budget came to Shalena Smith Interior Design to create the nursery of her dreams. Take a look at this article then come back to my blog and tell me what you think.

All the items featured in the Tastemaker article are on the home page of Gaga Designs and you can view them on Houzz

I’m off to Europe to pay a visit to one of my virtual clients. Stay tuned next month when I blog about the experience! xoxo
